On Your Bike is a registered charity. We incorporated in August 2011 and obtained charitable status soon after (September 2011). We operate from two fully equipped locations in Taunton and Bridgwater Somerset.
Our Taunton premises are prominently located at The Coach House, Station Approach, TA1 1QW, directly opposite Taunton Railway Station.
Our Bridgwater premises are situated at Trinity Hall, St Saviours Avenue, TA6 3NZ, next to Blake Gardens.
At both sites, our trained mechanics are supported by volunteers to help recycle donated bikes for re-sale, provide a full range of bike services together with parts sales. We also carry out training courses from both locations.
We started out by delivering training courses at our workshops for disadvantaged individuals providing them with skills and confidence to access employment in the local area. We have continued to evolve, moving into our current workshops in 2019 and have extended and enhanced our service offerings since our inception. Indeed, during the pandemic, the team at OYB became, overnight, essential key workers and continued to provide services under defined government guidelines, and offered the use of bikes, repairs, and servicing to NHS workers.
We strive for continued growth in order to give back to our communities.
One of our goals is to improve employability through building self-confidence, training and team working. We aim to provide a safe and supportive environment that encourages individuals into positive activity and back into employment. We actively seek to work with other charities and providers, so that our beneficiaries can take full advantage to look for and secure employment opportunities on completion of their time with us.
Our key aim is to train and support those who have suffered social exclusion, those suffering with physical disabilities and mental health issues, ex-service personnel, refugees, ex-offenders, homeless and long term unemployed. We strive to engage with our volunteers and beneficiaries so that they gain new skills, confidence, and self-worth within our supportive environment. Many participants move on to gainful employment, some take their skills further and gain qualifications such as City and Guilds.
We rely on members of the public to generously donate used bikes, many of which can be readily re cycled and sold. Many children’s bikes have merely been outgrown and thus can be quickly repaired and sold on thus helping many disadvantaged families in our communities.
Since 2019 we have re sold 2803 and serviced 8,061 bikes. Since 2010 we have recycled thousands more bikes for spares etc. in order to provide affordable bikes to local communities and save the ‘unsalvageable’ bikes from landfill.
Our two commercial operations, as well as selling recycled bikes, provide a full range of bike services, ranging from a Tune Up Service increasing to a Hydraulic Gold Service. Both workshops also sell a range of both new and second-hand spares together with bike accessories.
