VOLUNTEERING

What we can offer you
Many of our EAB graduates get the bug for bikes and ask if they can volunteer in our sites, which we try to accommodate, although this is not the only route into volunteering with us.

Volunteers at On Your Bike assist with useful tasks during their time with us, including preparing bikes for sale, salvaging parts from bikes we can no longer use etc

Some volunteers even assist us with collecting donated bikes, funding applications, admin, fundraising events, gardening.

If you would like to know more about volunteering with us, please use the button below.

CORPORATE VOLUNTEERING

On Your Bike are very fortunate to benefit from other local businesses support by way of “volunteering days”

To date Suez and (Tracey whats the name of the other company that visits us?) have asked to support our work across both of our sites.

Sometimes the volunteers are busy assisting us with Bicycles and other times they have helped us with other tasks such as Painting decorating, as well as helping us with a big garden renovation at our Bridgwater site.

We really appreciate their help, if your or your business would be interested in volunteering with us please do get in touch.

On Your Bike - Dr Bike

On Your Bike provides experienced Cytech 2/3 qualified mechanics for “Dr Bike” sessions. These sessions provide safety checks and adjustments on bikes owned by members of the public or employees. The sessions aim to make bikes safer, keep people riding, and reinforce corporate and individual aspirations to travel sustainably.

The Dr Bike service includes doing bike safety checks for the public or staff/employees, giving advice, and making minor adjustments where possible. The average check/time for a bike is 15 minutes. Where time permits, our mechanic may replace some essential parts such as brake blocks or cables, but there is no obligation for us to do so. Our mechanics are happy to work on bikes in front of the bike owner and explain the issues they find.

As a booking organisation, you need to ensure that bikes are pre-booked into a timed slot, that your staff or clients understand the time to deliver and/or collect, and to manage that process. Our mechanics can’t be responsible for bikes that are left with them following the check, particularly at the end of the day.

For price enquiries or booking, please email Taunton@on-your-bike.org

SCHOOL PROJECTS

Volunteer - On Your Bike

We can offer schools a free Maintenance Course for Year 5 and 6.  OYB can accommodate up to four sessions or groups in a single school day (8:45 AM – 3:15 PM).

In each one-hour session pupils will:

  • learn how to perform a safety check on a bike,
  • learn how to identify the parts of a bike,
  • participate in a puncture repair race,
  • complete a quiz to reinforce learning.

The aim is to promote safer cycling practices while enhancing the skills taught in Bikeability but is not dependant on participation in Bikeability.  Each session is inclusive of all students.

OYB will also:

  • assess all the bikes that have been brought in by the children who are attending the sessions
  • any minor issues that are identified will be fixed on-site, if possible, and this will be at no cost to the school or the family
  • Any major issues will be communicated to the teacher, and a report will be made available for the parents

Over the past three years, OYB has successfully delivered this project to numerous schools across Somerset.

COUNCIL PROJECTS

We can offer Parish, Town and County councils Dr Bike repair sessions, basic maintenance sessions and schools sessions in their locations. We can also collect unused bicycle for recycling.

We hope these sessions will:

  • promote active transport, sustainability, and recycling within the community.
  • promote affordable transport options, reducing air pollution and landfill.
  • offer cycling support and basic maintenance advice

Our initial partnering was with Bishops Lydeard Parish Council (funded by SALC) and has been very positive, both in terms of community engagement and raising awareness of the benefits of cycling.

To discuss your Council’s requirements, our pricing structure or to book a session please email tracey@on-your-bike.org
